Tracing The History And Success Story Of Ford Fiesta
Ford has always been a big name to reckon with in the auto industry. The company has, over time, taken some huge risks, most of which proved to be successful. In the 1970s, the company took the decision to build a small front wheel drive car. This was considered to be a big risk for this giant automaker. The only small car available in the market at that time the Escort, and it was believed that the company will suffer greatly in trying to make profits on the sale of this small front wheel car.
However, by 1977, when the company actually launched the vehicle in the market, under the name of Ford Fiesta, there was a huge demand for the same, and it became an instant success.
Since its launch, Fiesta has never looked back. In UK alone, the company has sold more than 450000 units, proving that it is by far the most popular small hatchback car in the country. Heres a look at some of high points in the history of Ford Fiesta since its launch till date.
1976 – 83
In an attempt to change the mindset of the customers, and make a small hatchback a preferred choice of the consumers, the company launched the Ford Fiesta, and in 1980 alone, more than a million units of the vehicle were sold. The vehicle at that time was available in three models:
However, the real winner and the most popular model of the vehicle was the XR2. It came with a 1.6 liter engine, had rakish graphics and alloy wheels. This vehicle became the obsession of the entire generation of racer boys.
1983 – 89
The generation of Ford Fiesta was launched during this period. However, the second generation did not come with any major changes or surprises and hence was unable to shake things up for the vehicle or the company.
Minot changes in the looks of the vehicle were seen, like it got a rounder face, the interiors were sharpened, etc. The dimensions of the vehicle remained unchanged. New engines were introduced, and we got the first diesel Fiesta.
What made the second generation Fiestas special was the array of special editions that were offered like the Firefly, Dash, Festival, Holiday, Finesse, Olumpus Sport, etc. Whatever word the customers preferred, there was a Mark 2 Fiesta with the words written on it available for them.
The XR2 in the second generation offered some interesting features like plastic bodykit, five speed box, etc., things that were considered to be aspirational for the 1980s.
1989 – 94
The third generation of Ford Fiesta was completely revolutionized and an all together new platform was used for these vehicles. They were bigger in size, had better engines, revised suspensions, and many other major changes. In fact, a new five door version of the Fiesta was also a part of this third generation. Within the first two years, more than a million units were sold. This included the comical specially named Fiestas that the company offered to its customers.
Three new sports variety Fiestas were introduced by the company.
These three sports Fiestas cemented the credentials of the new Zatec engines that were used in them.
1994 – 99
From 1996 till 1999, Ford Fiesta was the best selling car of the UK. The production line of Fiesta was shared with Mazda 121. Many changes were once again made in the vehicle.
1999 – 2002
The fifth generation of Fiesta is only a facelift version of the fourth generation vehicles. However, the facelift is so amazing that it feels like you are looking at and buying a completely new car. Issues related to Zetec-S were addressed in this vehicle. Super cool bodykit, stiff chassis and Puma brakes were part of the new model.
2002 – 08
The sixth generation of Fiesta showed that the company and this model had come a long way and become matured. Airbags and ABS systems became a standard across the entire range. Aggressive marketing techniques were used by the company for this vehicle, and an international market for the same was created in locations like Japan, India and South America. All the modern stuff you can want in a car, like leather upholstery, air conditioning, Bluetooth, etc., was available in the same.
2008 – Present
The seventh generation, Fiesta ST is considered to be the best front wheel cars available in the market currently. Ambient lighting, keyless entry, USB ports, electric power steering, radiator grill, etc., everything about this vehicle today is classy, sophisticated and luxurious. From the time when Fiesta was launched as a cheap to produce vehicle, it has now managed to become one of the most upscale vehicles in the market.
