The company had initially planned to named Ford Fusion as Ford Futura. However, there were some trademark issues with regards to this name, and hence, the company was forced to rename its family sedan car as the Ford Fusion. The styling, the technology and most importantly, the value of this car, made it the biggest competitors, and the first real threat to American car makers like Toyota Camary, Honda Accord, etc.
This vehicle was introduced by the company in 2006, and sine then, the company has been making constant changes in the vehicle, and upgrading the same to ensure that provides maximum comfort and luxury to the buyers. Below we have tracked the history of the Ford Fusion, along with all the changes that have been made in the same over time.
This was the year the vehicle was introduced in the market as a bridge between a compact and a mid sized model. The very first model of the car offered two engines. The first engine was a 2.3 liter, 4 cylinder engine, which offered a power of 160 hp and was available in both manual as well as automatic transmissions. The second engine was a V6, 3 liter engine, which was available only with automatic transmission, giving a power of 220 hp. All the models of the Ford Fusion that were available in 2006 came as front wheel drive. Three trim levels or models of the vehicle were available in 2006:
Buyers had the option of choosing features like anti-lock brakes, side curtain airbags and traction control.

The update in the Fusion happened in this year. Not only were the interiors and the exteriors of the vehicle upgraded, but the driving dynamics were improved drastically as well.
Hybrid Fusion – A new model called the Hybrid Fusion was introduced this year. It used a 2.5 liter, 4 cylinder hybrid engine, automatic transmission, which generated a power of 191 hp. This hybrid model offered a fuel economy of 41 miles per gallon.
Changes in the current models were as follows:
Basic model – the old engine was replaced by a 2.5 liter 4 cylinder engine, giving 175 hp power.
SE Model – The V6 engine added 18 horses, making it possible for the vehicle to generate a power of 240 hp.
Fusion Sport – This model also made its debut this year and came with a 3.5 liter V6 engine, giving a power of 262 hp.
Not many changes happened this year. The few standard changes that did occur included the addition of the Ford’ MyKey system, HD radio, rain sensing wipers and a manual shift mode for the automatic transmission.
Since the company wanted to completely redesign Fusion, hence no changes were made this year and focused all its energies on redesigning the 2013 model.

The V6 engine was dropped and replaced by 2 liter turbo charged engine, giving 175 hp power. The engine in the hybrid model was also replaced by 1.6 liter turbo charged 4 cylinder engine, giving 178 hp power.
The 1.6 liter turbo charged engine was replaced by a slightly more efficient engine. A base level S model was added to the lineup. Buyers were given the option of choosing inflatable seat belts, heated rear seats and ventilated front seats.
The manual transmission available in SE model was ditched and the backup camera became a standard feature.

The looks haven’t been changed much, but the powertrain has been overhauled significantly. Many new features like adaptive cruise control system, improved park assist system, pre collision breaking system, etc., have been added to the vehicle. The biggest change, however, is the introduction of the new luxury Platinum trim level. This new luxury Fusion offers high end interiors, distinctive wheels and high quality cabin material.
