Quote from Ford Mustang Wiki : The Vehicle With The Longest Production History :
First Generation (1965- 1973)
All the Mustangs that were designed during this period shared the same platform, that of Ford Falcon. However, every year, the company made slight changes in the styling and design of the vehicle, in order to add weight and increase the size of the car. It was in 1967 that the first major change happened in this vehicle. In an attempt to make it more competitive against the Chevy’s Cameo, a new 6.4 liter 290 cubic inch, V8 engine was added to the vehicle. This engine produced energy of 190 hp. The changes made to the 1968 model were more in keeping with the federal regulations like new side marker lights, windshield mounted rear view mirrors, etc. In the year 1969, Mustang offered a performance options like Boss 302, Shelby GT320, GT500 and Mach1. From the year 1970 till 73, the changes were minor, although the vehicle continued to grow in weight and size. In fact, the 1971 Mustang is considered to be the longest Mustang ever. However, the sale of this vehicle dropped during this period, since the customers were looking for a sleeker and trim car, considering the rising gas prices.
