Quote from Ford Mustang Wiki : The Vehicle With The Longest Production History :
Third Generation (1979 – 1993)
Fox platform was used for the third generation Mustangs. The styling of the vehicle was drastically changed, making it much better than Mustang II. However, the engine remained the same till 1982. In 1982, the company started focusing on improving the performance of the vehicle, and a new Mustang GT was launched, with a V8, 5.0 liter engine. This vehicle was lighter in weight and gave a better performance than its competitor cars like Cameo, etc. in 1984 Mustang SVO was introduced to compete with the bets German cars. This vehicle was different in both looks as well as performance from the earlier Mustangs and was more expensive as well. it proved to be a big failure, and the company stopped its sales in 1986. In 1987, a major facelift was given to Mustang GT, and was available in two options only LX and GT. Till 1993, small changes and additions were made to this vehicle.
